About Island Girl

An Island Girl’s Journey

Talofa Lava, my name is Evo and I am a 24-year-old Polynesian blogger. Since I was a little girl, I loved reading and writing. In fact, I loved it so much, I was carrying a bag filled with at least 30 books in it while I was still in primary school (Yes, I was that kid!). I remember how happy I was when my parents bought me the final Harry Potter novel from the series as a gift to me when I was in Year 7. I partook in speech competitions and debating competitions both in primary and high school too. To me, writing came hand in hand with reading and public speaking and I felt like I was naturally good at it.

The idea of blogging first came to me when I was in high school but honestly, I was too lazy to put the hard work in. However, in August 2017, I was on the phone with a good friend early hours of the morning and we were talking about blogging. I explained that it’s always been something I’ve been interested in but was too afraid to try it out. My friend Resa told me it was definitely worth pursuing after hearing me talk about it. And at 5:30am one Friday morning, I started a new Instagram page. I wanted to separate it from my personal Instagram and decided that as I’ll need to build up an audience first, I will need to do so using social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. And so, my journey had started.

Fast forward and it is now September 2018 and I have learnt so much on this journey and have met so many amazing people. I am a part of a great community called NZ Bloggers that connects bloggers all around Auckland and in New Zealand. I attend their Brunch Club which is held monthly and will be going to this month’s one! I’ve attended various events as Island Girl Blogger and even now, I get shy when someone asks me if I’m Island Girl Blogger at an event – It’s honestly a great feeling meeting someone in real life and then being told they’ve either followed your page or have seen your page on Instagram.

Being a Polynesian blogger is something I am proud of because unfortunately, singing and dancing aren’t things I’m good at. But writing? Writing is something I’ve loved and grasped onto since I was a child. This is only the beginning for me. I am still learning how to master a few things here and there but it is all a part of the journey right? I’m excited to embark on this journey as Island Girl Blogger but I’m also excited to see how my blog grows in the next couple of years.
